We loved our day trip with Bali on Bike and with Sandy in particular. We were picked up on time and first driven to the coffee plantation, a beautiful setting, where we had a small tour of the garden, watch coffee beans being roasted and then taste all the different coffees and also get a small pancake snack. Now high on caffeine, we continued our drive to Gunung Batur, a spectacular view of the Lake Batur and the Volcano, where we stopped for a photo and to embrace the view. A few minutes down the road it was time to get cycling. All the bikes were ready and there were a number for us to chose from. All relatively modern and helmets provided.
We then spent about 3 hours, with lots of stops, cycling downhill all the way to Sandy's house for lunch. For the most part we took a back road that was not busy but still paved and it was just beautiful cycling through villages, rice terraces and past temples, watching the local day to day life pass by. We stopped in one small family compound known to Sandy and the guides, where we spent time talking to the locals (via Sandy as the translator) and watching them weave bamboo mats. We then had a drink of water and a banana and were on our way again.
Towards the end of the ride we did use a busier road for perhaps 20 minutes before turning off towards Sandy's compound and again through some very beautiful rice terraces. At Sandy's, a delicious buffet lunch and drinks were served which I can honestly say was one the of the most delicious meals I had in Bali. This is all freshly prepared in the compound by Sandy and Bob's family.
Overall I would summarise the best things as:
- New modern bikes with helmets
- Friendly and funny (!) guide Sandy makes it easy to love Bali and the bike tour
- Beautiful scenery
- Amazing lunch
The negative things were:
- The bikes were all small - medium size (which suited me ok), but if you are tall you might need to request ahead that they organise a bigger bike for you
- Breakfast was only really a pancake snack, so if you need lots of energy (like me), you better eat before you get picked up
I know there have been many great reviews written about Bali on Bike and am glad to have met the guys and been able to experience cycling in Bali. An unforgettable experience.
